AFCON Fallout: Players ‘Upset’ With Captain In Bonuses Row

There has reportedly been a major fallout between players in Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON squad.

Players still competing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast are said to be upset with their captain for not fighting for squad bonuses ahead of the tournament’s quarter-final stage.

As reported by SCORENigeria, a row over bonuses and allowances is threatening to divide the Nigeria camp in the Ivory Coast.

Despite the country’s government having approved the bonuses Nigeria’s players are owed, the report claims several senior stars in the squad have fallen out with captain Ahmed Musa.

It is said the 31-year-old winger has been accused of “not fighting” for his teammates, and that they believe he is “taking sides with the NFF leadership as it concerns payments for them”.

The story suggests one teammate has even confronted the former Leicester City man, with the news outlet stating one player in the team has anonymously called Musa out for his apparent failure to represent his compatriots.

“There is a serious issue of trust between Ahmed Musa and the other players when it comes to pursuing their entitlements,” an unnamed source reportedly said.

“They believe he has not represented their interests.”

Some in the squad are expected to go above Musa and “take the matter to a higher level soon”.
