Barcelona ‘make moves’ to tempt Man Utd into ‘low cost’ transfer for Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood, Getafe, Man Utd, 2023/24

Barcelona have started the process to sign Mason Greenwood, with the La Liga giants looking at creative ways to sign the Manchester United forward in a ‘low cost’ transfer this summer.

Greenwood is currently on loan at Getafe where he has enjoyed a fruitful season so far, grabbing six goals and five assists primarily while playing out on the right flank.

The 22-year-old will likely be sold by United this summer, having not played for the club since his arrest in January 2022, although new executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to rule out the prospect of Greenwood’s return.

However, Greenwood is entering the final year of his contract with United and the club are aware of the controversy any return could generate, while a sale would also boost their spending potential in the summer.

La Liga president Javier Tebas spoke earlier this month about his hopes for Greenwood to remain in Spain, with a host of sides interested in signing the English youngster following his return to form this season.

And Barcelona are hoping to position themselves at the front of the queue, with SPORT claiming the Catalans have already made moves towards ‘closer relations’ without committing to any deal as of yet.

Barcelona to use ‘La Masia’ talent as bargaining chips with United

Greenwood’s contractual situation has led to Barcelona identifying him as a ‘low cost option’ to strengthen the team’s front line as the club continue to battle with financial constraints.

Barca will first look to sell a forward in order to make space for Greenwood and the vision is for him to play on the left of the attack, despite his preference to play in the middle or on the right.

As part of the agreement to loan Greenwood, Getafe are also understood to be entitled to a portion of any fee United receive even if he moves to another club such as Barca.

Although United are hoping to receive in excess of €30 million for Greenwood, Barca could look to make the signing cheaper by including some of their young ‘La Masia’ prospects.

United are said to be ‘very aware’ of Barca’s youth team and there are thought to be several ‘interesting kids’ who have been showing potential that could be used as a makeweight in any deal for Greenwood.
