Barcelona transfer news: La Masia star Dani Rodriguez heading for Tottenham

Barcelona fans this week were frustrated by the sight of La Masia academy graduates Dani Olmo and Xavi Simons lining up for RB Leipzig against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

With money tight at the Camp Nou, it’s never been as important to blood young players through to the first team and here were two high-calibre prospects who were allowed to leave for nothing.

Olmo left for Dinamo Zagreb back in 2015, aged only 16, in search of first-team football before earning his big-money Bundesliga transfer.

Simons, meanwhile, opted to leave for Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 and looks set to make the grade at the Parc des Princes next season when his Leipzig loan ends.

The Catalan club again look likely to be deprived of transfer funds this summer, meaning increased roles for academy stars like Marc Guiu, Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal and more next season.

Dani Rodriguez set to leave for nothing

It could have been an ideal opportunity for hotshot Dani Rodriguez to make the step up but instead it looks like Barca could well be losing yet another academy star for nothing.

Rodriguez, 18, is widely seen as one of the best prospects in European football and is enjoying a breakout campaign for Barca in the UEFA Youth League.

He’s scored four goals and provided three assists in his seven Youth League matches, attracting the attention of scouts all over the continent.

Rodriguez’s contract is set to expire with little sign of a breakthrough being made before the end of the season.

Rodriguez signed for Barca back in 2020 from Real Sociedad amid other interest from PSG and has developed well through the age groups.

However, that progress looks like it is going to come to nought for Barca with Tottenham now ready to steal in and offer the youngster a future pathway according to Fichajes.

Spurs’ second transfer victory over Barca

The report claims Spurs are readying a Bosman transfer for the youngster, although there is uncertainty on the part of the Catalan outlet over whether Barca are entitled to activate a contract extension at the end of the season.

Should an extension exist and be activated then it could complicate Spurs’ plans and see Rodriguez stay put.

It would be the second time Spurs have got one up on Barca in the transfer window in recent weeks with Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall opting for North London over Catalonia.
