A leaked statement doing the rounds on social media claims that MultiChoice, the umbrella company which owns broadcast satellite company DStv, will not be broadcasting the continental football showpiece after they failed to secure the rights for the tournament.

The statement from the company states: “Dear Valued Customers

“SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2024 because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.

“MultiChoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivaled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including the premier League, LaLiga, Series A, Zambian Super League, and many more of Football’s most prestigious Competitions.”

The leaked document also stated that those who do wish to enjoy the tournament would be able to do so through free-to-air stations, meaning that South African viewers can only consume the competition through the SABC and their various outlets.

However, it is believed that the Randburg-based organisation and CAF’s newest media rights holders, New World TV, are still in negotiations over a deal, with an official statement from MultiChoice expected soon.
