Duncan McGuire’s Blackburn Rovers transfer collapses with USMNT striker on plane: Sources

Blackburn Rovers’ deal to sign U.S. national team forward Duncan McGuire appears to have collapsed while the player was on a flight to England to complete the move, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.

Blackburn and Orlando had agreed to a fee near an initial $4 million and Orlando authorized McGuire to depart training and travel to England on Wednesday morning.

The Athletic has reached out to Blackburn Rovers for comment.

Blackburn sit 18th in the Championship, eight points clear of the relegation zone. The club just beat Wrexham in the fourth round of the FA Cup to set up a fifth round match against Newcastle.

McGuire, 22, made his debut with the U.S. national team this month. He’s likely to be on the United States squad at the Olympics this summer. He had 15 goals and three assists across 1,930 minutes across all competitions in his debut professional season.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
