Erling Haaland has reportedly realised he might need to join Real Madrid to earn recognition at individual awards ceremonies.

It is rumoured that Erling Haaland could look to swap Manchester City for Real Madrid due to Lionel Messi – here is how.

According to Spanish publication AS, the 22-year-old could see joining Los Blancos as his only chance of winning major individual awards after missing out on both the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player prizes in 2023 to Messi.

Only two winners of the Ballon d’Or, recognised as the world’s most prestigious individual football accolade, in the past 24 years has come from teams in England, with his father Alf-Inge reported to have left the most recent ceremony smiling ironically.

This was after he said: “It’s going to be difficult to have a season like the one Erling did again, with the team winning everything and him setting all the records. All the luck in the world to whoever tries to beat that record.”

The abovementioned news outlet claims Haaland has realised that getting global recognition might be difficult at City, with Fabio Cannavaro, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema having scooped up the famous prize while on the books of Los Blancos in the past 18 years.

It is said that, while the Norwegian is considered a back-up option in Real’s long-held Kylian Mbappe pursuit, a potential switch for the former Borussia Dortmund man should not be ruled out.

Speaking earlier this season, his agent Rafaela Pimenta refused to say whether  or not her client would commit his long-term future to the Citizens, while his dad has previously stated that his son is determined to try his hand in various other leagues.
