Inter Miami completely dominated the first half, getting their first goal in the 39th minute and conceding no real scoring chances to Real Salt Lake.
The balance of play completely flipped in the second half though. RSL came out with much more energy and attacking intent, and forced turnover after turnover deep in Miami’s defensive zone. They failed to take any of their chances but another team on another night would have made Miami pay.
Both teams fatigued in the waning minutes before an incisive counterattack led by Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez set up Diego Gomez for Miami’s second goal.
Miami’s future opponents around MLS will have watched this game tonight and taken away confidence that the league’s “superteam” can be beaten.
