LALIGA Chief: ‘I Don’t Care About Greenwood’s Past’

The president of LALIGA has claimed that he is not concerned about Mason Greenwood’s recent past.

Despite Mason Greenwood’s recent legal troubles, the president of LALIGA has insisted he does not care about the forward’s past, and urged him to stay in the Spanish top flight.

At the beginning of 2022, the Englishman was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and coercive behaviour. The forward spent the next year uncertain of his football future as jail time looked a serious possibility.

That was not to be the reality for the Bradford native, however, as in February 2023, all charges against him were dropped and the versatile attacker was able to resume his career.

Manchester United decided that he would not be integrated back into the first team despite being acquitted, paving the way for a loan move to Getafe in LALIGA, where he has had a good season for them so far.

With Greenwood having provided seven goals and five assists across all competitions for Los Azulones, Spanish top flight president Javier Tebas has now stated that he is not concerned about the England international’s recent troubles as he wants him to stay in the country.

“He’s doing really well at Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and he continues to stay in Spanish football because that’s always good for us,” he told members of the media, as per Goal.

“He is just another player. He had a past, but not a past we can do anything about. He was innocent and wasn’t condemned.

“We can’t be judges for everything. If we did that, we’d have no teams. I’m a lawyer, so it’s important to say he is not condemned. He was acquitted [in the UK]. Should we have reopened the case in Spain? Do I know the case in great detail? No. Greenwood was not condemned, so I don’t care.”
