According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils are in negotiations with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) to keep the 27-year-old goalkeeper until they take on Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League encounter on 14 January.

Clubs were obligated to release players for the African showpiece on 1 January, but the Mancunians managed to negotiate to have the Nkol Ngok native stay for their third-round FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic on 8 January.

However, the club now reportedly wants to keep Onana even longer as they hope to have the west African in goal for their crunch league encounter against the Lilywhites.

Should the English giants’ request be granted, the La Masia alumni will have to board a seven-hour flight immediately after the clash at Old Trafford as the Indomitable Lions are set to take on Guinea in their first AFCON group-stage match the very next day at 19:00 CAT.

As a consequence of FIFA rules, because Onana was called up by Cameroon, the shot-stopper is obliged to honour his selection otherwise risk being sidelined regardless for United.
