Manchester United confirm assistant Eric Ramsay to become Minnesota United head coach this week

Manchester United assistant coach Eric Ramsay has been announced as the new head coach of Minnesota United.

The Athletic broke the news last week that the 32-year-old had agreed a deal to become the MLS club’s new head coach.

The Premier League side have now confirmed that Ramsay will leave the club after Manchester United’s Premier League game against Manchester City on March 3.

Ramsay told his new club’s website: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fanatic fan base and a brilliant infrastructure. I’ve spoken to a lot of the club’s staff throughout the process and you can’t help but feel everyone’s passion for moving the club forward.

“There is a really exciting pathway for the future of the club and I’m looking forward to playing my role in realizing that vision. I thank the club for putting its faith in me and I hope it’s the start of another successful period for everyone connected with Minnesota United.”

Minnesota began their 2024 MLS season with a 2-1 victory over Austin FC at the Q2 Stadium.

Ramsay, who is highly rated in the English game, will be the youngest head coach in MLS this season by a wide margin. NYCFC’s Nick Cushing, at 39, is the second youngest.

The Welshman has worked under several managers at Manchester United, staying on through different regimes and rising at the club. Ramsay joined as a player development and set-piece coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021. He remained under Ralf Rangnick and grew in importance on Erik ten Hag’s staff after the Dutchman was appointed manager ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Ramsay was also an assistant coach for the Wales national team for six months in addition to his duties with United, before stepping away last fall. When he was announced, Wales manager Rob Page called Ramsay “arguably one of the best young coaches in football at this moment in time.”
