The Pharaohs returned home from the tournament in the Ivory Coast without claiming a single victory.

After drawing all three of their matches in Group B, Egypt found themselves among the final 16, but suffered a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo following Mohamed Abou-Gabal’s failed attempt from 12 yards.

The north African nation’s competition fell under heavy scrutiny after the news Mohamed Salah would return to Liverpool to recover from a hamstring injury he sustained in their 2-2 draw with Ghana.

Although the idea was for the winger to head back to the African continent if Egypt progressed to the latter stages of the AFCON, the 31-year-old received strong criticism from fans and former Egyptian internationals.

Following the outrage to the team’s performances in west Africa, the country’s FA has apologised to fans.

“The Egyptian Football Association apologises to fans for the results presented by the national football team during their participation in the 2023 African Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast,” the statement read.
