Despite having spent about a €1 billion (R20.8 billion) to assemble this latest iteration of the Blues, it was the injury-hit Reds who triumphed against them in the League Cup final this past weekend. Virgil van Dijk headed in the winner for Jurgen Klopp’s charges in the 118th minute to win 1-0 as the west Londoners suffered a sixth successive domestic cup final defeat.

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali were in attendance at Wembley Stadium as they witnessed their heavy investment fail to yield a tangible return on the day.

While many might have presumed that the club’s chiefs would be infuriated by the former Paris Saint-Germain manager’s apparent inability to lift the trophy, Pochettino has insisted he has their full backing.

“Yes, yes, yes. They showed their support. And then after the game also, Todd sent a very nice message, yes,” the Argentine said, as per ESPN.

“We were talking. I said hello when I saw them at the stadium and after during the night, I met Behdad and, yes, we were talking.

“We were sharing the opinions of the game. We were talking about the opportunity we missed to win a trophy because I think we played really well for 90 minutes and I think the team was really good.

“We created chances, we were not clinical enough. That is what happened since the beginning of the season, this is nothing new. We are looking forward to the next competition on Wednesday, and then, of course, be in the Premier League trying to win every single game, trying to be as high as possible.”
