Portland Timbers offer $15 million for Monterrey’s Germán Berterame, sources say

The Portland Timbers are in advanced talks over to sign Argentine forward Germán Berterame from CF Monterrey, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.

Those sources confirmed the Timbers have bid $15 million, which would be one of the biggest deals in MLS history. The deal is not agreed or finalized yet. Monterrey can still keep the player.

César Luis Merlo was first to report the offer.

Berterame, 25, moved to Atletico San Luis from San Lorenzo in 2019. He was reported to be signed by San Luis’ parent club Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2022 before being transferred to Monterrey in the same window, complicating the deal.

The center forward had 23 goals and nine assists in 61 appearances for Rayados. Berterame has 31 goals and six assists for San Luis. He can also play as a winger, an attractive quality for the Timbers front office, who wanted that positional flexibility with Felipe Mora on the squad, as well.

Portland is also in advanced talks to sign Club America forward Jonathan Rodriguez if the deal for Berterame doesn’t get done.
