PSG ‘Respond’ After Accusations They Influenced Messi’s 2021 Ballon d’Or Win

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly responded amid an investigation into their alleged involvement in Lionel Messi’s 2021 Ballon d’Or win.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the French giants have denied they pressured the organisers of the Ballon d’Or to hand the prestigious accolade to Messi three years ago.

The Argentine joined the French giants in 2021 as a free agent following his departure from Barcelona, and claimed his seventh Ballon d’Or later that same year after leading Argentina to success at the Copa America in Brazil.

Many believed then-Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski was more deserving of the award, however, with PSG now accused of attempting to influence those at France Football into giving the prize to Messi.

In 2021, France Football’s editor-in-chief was Pascal Ferre, who is now director of press and media relations for the PSG senior team.

French publication Le Monde has claimed the Ligue 1 giants tried getting behind Messi for the 2021 edition of the Ballon d’Or by offering “gifts and other benefits” to Ferre.

Ferre himself has reportedly strongly denied the suggestions, insisting he voted for Lewandowski in 2021 ahead of the now eight-time winner.
