In recent days, the experienced midfielder has been linked with a shock return to the Premier League after only joining Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq in July 2023.

Should he get his apparent wish to move back to more familiar surroundings, Henderson would reportedly be giving up millions of pounds in lost wages.

Henderson, 33, was strongly criticised for his decision to take his career to Saudi Arabia last year given his previously good relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, something that is believed to have impacted him.

The England international’s issues have been compounded by Al Ettifaq’s eight-match winless streak, which stretches back to November, while the departure of assistant manager Ian Foster, who helped persuade Henderson to join the club, has also not helped.

Furthermore, Henderson has battled with the hot conditions in the Middle East, where his side has an average attendance at home matches this season of just 7 800 in a stadium capable of holding 35 000.

The ex-Sunderland starlet has reportedly told his teammates he is considering his options, with Daily Mail claiming he will consider any potential moves back to England in the January transfer window.
