Against the Magpies, the 31-year-old played his final game for the Reds before bidding farewell ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

He did so in style as his second-half display helped secure the Merseysiders a 4-2 victory over their English rivals in what is historically a hotly contested fixture.

After missing a first-half penalty, the two-time CAF Men’s Player of the Year redeemed himself in the second stanza as he opened the encounter’s scoring with a tap-in, before putting Liverpool’s victory beyond doubt in the 86th minute by slotting in another spot-kick.

These strikes were Salah’s 150th and 151st Premier League goals for Liverpool since joining them in 2017 and according to Opta Sports, the tally makes him only the fifth player to score at least 150 goals for one English club, with the others on the illustrious list being Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Thierry Henry and Sergio Aguero.

The result ensures that Jurgen Klopp’s charges start 2024 at the summit of the league table, but will have to maintain their position without the services of legendary Egyptian forward as he is now headed to Ivory Coast to seek his first African title with Egypt.

The Pharaohs are considered one of the favourites for the tournament and should they make it as far as the final, Salah could miss as many as four EPL encounters, including a trip to fellow title rivals Arsenal.
