Timo Werner Transfer News: Tottenham can sign €53m Chelsea flop for just €17m – Fabrizio Romano

Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham, 2023/24

Tottenham can make Timo Werner’s loan permanent for just €17 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 28-year-old returned to the Premier League for the first time since his infamous stint at Chelsea in January. Werner had cost the Blues a whopping €53m, but ultimately headed back to the Bundesliga for just €20m as a major flop.

However, back at RB Leipzig, the German international lost his place to record arrival Lois Openda earlier in the season, which meant that he was looking for a new club ahead of the winter transfer window. Despite reports in the German media that he was reluctant to return to England after his Chelsea nightmare, he joined Tottenham on an initial six-month loan.

Surprisingly, Werner has managed to revive his career under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian has put his faith in the versatile attacker and Werner has been an important player pretty much since the day he arrived. He finally managed to break his scoring duck last weekend against Crystal Palace and Spurs fan will be hoping that he can build on this and become more productive.

Werner to join permanently?

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s clash with Aston Villa, Postecoglou hailed Werner’s impact, but admitted that he can still improve after wasting several good opportunities in recent fixtures. “I think he’s been really important,” the Australian said.

“We threw him in straight away. And when you come in in January, especially for someone like Timo, standing as a mature player, he’s not a young player we’ve brought in to develop, we’re bringing him in to make an impact, and I think he has made an impact for us.”

“I do think there’s more to come from him for sure. He’s working hard in training. I think his performances are improving. I thought last week was probably his best performance, aside from his goal, I thought it was his best performance for us.”

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have the option to make Werner’s loan permanent for just €17m, which would be a major bargain. Despite his obvious flaws, the 28-year-old still boasts an impressive Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €37.5m.
